Travelling In Turkey

By Air
Turkish Airlines (THY) provides the widest network of domestic flights from the international Airports Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Trabzon, Dalaman and Antalya to all of the major Turkish cities. There are bus connections to and from airports and city terminals.

By Sea
Turkish Maritime Lines have several coastal services providing excellent opportunities for travelling in Turkey. Ferries operating from Istanbul to major Black Sea an Aegean ports offer and alternative to the conventional means of transportation.
For those looking for a panoramic journey in Istanbul, vessels operate between numerous piers and provide delightful sightseeing tours in the Bosphours.

By Rail
The wide network of the Turkish State Railways connects most major cities. The trains have couchettes, sleeping cars, restaurants, with lounge cars offering first and second class service. In the Aegean region, it is possible for groups to charter a stream train which has all kind of facilities for trips with a route of your choice that allows you a more relaxed way of travelling through this beautiful region. Train charters are also available for all areas of Turkey for large groups.

By Road
Road Network: Turkey has an extensive network of well maintained roads linking her towns, cities and popular tourist areas. When arriving from Europe, the Bosphorus crossing to Asia has been greatly facilited by the completion of the Istanbul by-pass and the tow Bosphorus Bridges lead to Istanbul-Ankara Expressway. The E80 and E90 are the two main roads leading to Turkey from European borders.

Road Signs
Turkish road signs conform to the international s Protocol on Road Signs. Archaeological and historical sites are indicated by brown signs.

Highway Tickets
Although it is possible to pay highway ticket fees by cash in the toll plazas, it is not possible to do so while crossing the bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Therefore, our foreign guests are strongly advised to obtain a highway payment card, called KGS. The card is sold at the entrances of highways and the buyer should pay 30 Turkish Liras (app. 14 Euros) to obtain the card. However this fee will be loaded as credit into your card, so you can use it in the highways and bridges, during your stay in Turkey.

Traffic Circulation
Traffic circulates on the right and the Turkish Highway Code is similar to those of European countries. There is a 50 km/hr speed limit in urban centers and a 90 km/hr limit outside urban centers.

Petrol
Filling stations are well distributed over all roads and those on the main highways often have attached service stations and 24 hour open restaurants. Unleaded fuel is available at most stations.

Taxis
All taxis are easy to recognize with their yellow color with a taxi sign on the top. All taxis have meters with affixed starting price that increases every kilometer and the rate increases between midnight and 6am.

Dolmus
A dolmus is a shared taxi in form of a minibus that operates on a regular basis along designated routes. Cheaper than a taxi, you pay one fixed rate for the route. Each dolmus has a list of their destinations displayed in the front window. You can only pay in Turkish Lira.

Rent a Car
International Rent a Car services as well as local ones provide rent a car services both in Kemer and Antalya with center offices and branches.

Intercity Coaches
A popular and less expensive way to get to different towns and resorts is by coach. These buses run according to set routers and timetables. Destinations and tickets can be purchased from each company 's stations around the city or directly from the intercity bus terminal.

DRIVING IN TURKEY

Motorist Rules : Those who wish to travel with their vans, minibuses. automobiles, station wagons, bicycles, motorcyles-motorbikes, buses, motor coaches, trailers, caravans or other transport vehicles, will have to provide the following documentation:
1- Passport
2- Driving License
3- Car License (documents where all details related to the car and owner's name are registered). If the car is registered under a third name, a power of attorney authorising the usage should be provded.
4- Internal green card (Insurance card)
5- The TR.sgn should be visible
6- Transit book "Carnet de Passage" (for those who want to proceed to Middle East)

The vehicle can be brought into Turkey up to 6 months. If for any important reason the staying periods has to be extended it is necessary to apply to the following authorities before the end of period declared:

Traffic in Turkey

- Most traffic signs in Turkey are international. By observing traffic regulations and speed limits, you can avoid danger in Turkey.
- It is obligatory for the drivers and all passengers in the car to use safety belts in the front seats.
- In densely populated areas there is a speed limit of 50km/h unless specifically shown with traffic signs.
- In Turkey it is forbidden to drive while under the influence.
- Drive on the right overtake from the left. Give way to any vehicle, including bicycles, coming from the right-bicycles, too.
- Give way to pedestrians. Do not overtake a stationary vehicle which is within 5 metres of a pedestrian crossing or a vehicle which stops you from seeing the pedestrian crossing.
-Please overtake only when you can return to your own lane without endangering or disturbing other traffic.

Speed Limits
Urban areas: 50 km/h
Dual carriageways: 90 km/h
Motorways: 120 km/h

There are other speed limits indicated by traffic signs.

In Case of Accident. The accident should be reported to the police or gendarmarie. That report has to be certified by the nearest local authority. The owner should apply to the customs Authority with her/his passport and report.
If the vehicle can be repaired, it is necessary to inform the customs authority first and then take the vehicle to a garage. If the vehicle is not repairable and if the owner wishes to leave the country without her/his vehicle, she/he has to deliver it to the nearest customs office and the registration of her/his vehicle on her/his passport will be cancelled. Only after the cancellation can the owner of the vehicle leave the country.
